Key Considerations for Choosing the Right Solar LED Street Lights

One of the most significant benefits of solar street lights is their energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Unlike traditional street lights that rely on the power grid and consume electricity, solar street lights harness sunlight to operate. This not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also lowers maintenance and energy costs for municipalities. With advancements in solar panel technology and LED lighting efficiency, the upfront costs of solar street lights are becoming increasingly competitive. In the long run, they can deliver substantial cost savings.

Before deciding which type of solar street light is suitable for your project, it is essential to consider various factors, as solar LED street lights may face several issues that could lead to failure. These include:

  1. 1.      Battery Problems
The use of low-quality or recycled batteries can significantly increase failure rates. Issues such as overcharging, undercharging, overheating, power reduction, or inability to hold a charge can accelerate battery deterioration. E-Lite uses Grade A Lithium LiFePO4 batteries, widely recognized as the best in the market. We use 100% new battery cells, assembled and tested in our own factory using professional equipment. This is why we can offer a 5-year warranty, while most suppliers only provide 2 or 3 years.

2. Damage to Solar Panels
Cracks, shading, or sand accumulation on solar panels can reduce sunlight conversion efficiency, affecting overall lighting performance. To ensure panel quality, E-Lite tests each solar panel with professional flash testing equipment. While the average conversion efficiency of solar panels on the market is around 20%, E-Lite panels achieve 23%. 3. Controller Malfunction
Controllers regulate battery charging/discharging and LED operation. Malfunctions can lead to charging interruptions, overcharging, or insufficient power for LEDs, resulting in lighting failures. E-Lite offers a variety of controller options to suit your preferences: the well-known SRNE controller, an E-Lite easy-operation controller, and the E-Lite Sol+ IoT-enabled solar charge controller.

4. LED Efficiency and Stability
LED fixtures may fail due to manufacturing defects, thermal stress, or electrical overload, leading to dim or non-functional streetlights. E-Lite uses a modular design with excellent thermal distribution. We collaborate closely with Philips Lumileds, a world-leading LED chip manufacturer. To maximize battery and solar panel performance, E-Lite employs high-brightness LED chips achieving 210–220 lm/W efficacy, compared to the market average of 150–160 lm/W.

5. Environmental Factors
Extreme conditions such as temperature fluctuations, high humidity, heavy rainfall, or saltwater exposure can accelerate component deterioration. E-Lite has developed its own tooling for housings and slip fitters, setting us apart from standard market offerings. Our design is well-loved by customers—one even called it the “iPhone design.” The slip fitter is extremely robust, capable of withstanding winds of up to 150 km/h. For example, after a typhoon in Puerto Rico, most street lights along a seaside road were blown away, but E-Lite solar street lights remained intact. Furthermore, with world-renowned AkzoNobel powder coating, our solar street lights can endure harsh environments, including coastal areas with saltwater exposure.
